When you buy a mouth guard to protect your teeth, that is the best move for your oral health. But did you know that without proper care, it could become a place for bacteria to grow, which could lead to damage and ground for your health issues? Whether you wear a night guard for grinding, a sports mouth guard for protection or aligners like invisalign, proper hygiene keeps bacteria at bay. As an experienced team of orthodontists, we see how proper

Why Cleaning Your Mouthguard Matters

If you are wondering how to clean your mouth guard properly, you need to start by understanding why it matters in the first place. Your mouth normally contains bacteria. It could be both good and bad bacteria. When you wear a mouth guard for a prolonged period of time, bacteria, plague and germs build up on the surface of the appliance and give you bad breath, gum discoloration and sometimes even irritation.

According to the centres of Disease control and prevention at least 47.2% of U.S. adults have some type of gum disease. Poor oral hygiene plays an important role. Even though a dirty mouth guard alone cannot cause gum disease, it can increase inflammation if the bacteria is not cleaned properly.

Poor cleaning habits can also reduce the lifespan of your mouth guard. Small daily steps to clean the appliance can prevent expensive replacements later on. This saves money and also the discomfort it gives you.

How To Clean Your Mouthguard Daily

1. Rinse Immediately

It is very important to clean your mouth guard before and after every use with cool or lukewarm water. This helps you remove the saliva and bacteria that accumulates over time. Avoid using very hot water because it can damage the material and change the fit of the guard.

2. Brush Gently

Brush your mouth guard once everyday. You need to use a soft bristle tooth brush and mild soap. Many of our patients assume tooth paste is the best. In reality, tooth paste contains abrasive particles and chemical components. These abrasive particles scratch the surface. These scratches create hiding spots for the bacteria. Use gentle circular motion to clean the surface and shake of excess water.

3. Let It Dry Completely

After cleaning, allow your mouth guard to dry completely. Air dry it before placing it in the case. Moisture trapped in the container can cause growth of mold and bacteria. Place it in a dry and clean surface where air circulation is good before storing it.

Weekly Deep Cleaning (Safe At-Home Methods)

Daily cleaning is good but weekly deep cleaning is very important.

Baking Soda Soak

Mix baking soda and water to create a gentle solution. Soak your mouth guard for 10 to 15 minutes, rinse it fully and let it dry. It helps reduce odour and remove tough stains.

Hydrogen Peroxide (Occasional Use)

Hydrogen peroxide can disinfect your guard when used properly. Dilute it with equal parts water. Soak it for a few minutes and rinse it properly. Do not use this method on a daily basis. It may weaken certain materials. If you feel unsure, ask our experts for guidance at Hello ortho.

Denture Cleaning Tablets

Clear or lightly scented tablets can help you clean a sports mouth guard or night guard. You need to choose the clear options and should follow the manufacturer instructions carefully. Avoid brightly colored or heavy fragrance tablets at any cost. They may stain or irritate when used.

What Not To Use On A Mouthguard

Many of our patients ask us whether they can clean the mouth guard with bleach or boiling water.

The answer is NO.

You should never use boiling water because it can change the shape and harsh chemicals should never be used because they damage the material used and it also leaves harmful residue on the guard. Never place it in the dish washer.  And the final warning is never soak your guard in alcohol based mouthwash.

How Often Should You Clean It?

You should rinse after and before every use. Brush it daily and deep clean it weekly.

At Hello Ortho in Napa and Petaluma, we check for wear during regular visits and this helps us catch smaller issues before they become bigger.

Signs It’s Time To Replace Your Mouthguard

Even with proper care and maintenance, no mouth guard lasts forever. You need to check for cracks and holes. Check if the fit feels loose or uncomfortable. If the bite changes or it does not feel comfortable, book an appointment with your orthodontist and change the guard.

Storage & Maintenance Tips

Always use a vented case for storing your mouth guard and clean the case every week. Keep it away from heat which is the common cause of warping of the material. Bring it to the appointments for inspection and proper care.
