Optimizing your children’s health and well-being

Pediatric and adult airway health

hello-ortho-services-pediatric-airways

Many significant growth and developmental milestones occur during our first 18 months of life. In fact, 60% of child’s facial development is completed by age 6, and 90% by age 12. As children grow, proper breathing is essential to their health, development, and educational success. Early detection and correction of airway problems can be integral to optimizing this fundamental and critical physiology. Airway evaluation is an important part of the process. Using precision diagnostic technologies and methodologies, our orthodontist is able to detect and correct any growth and development issues that may be present before they lead to any more serious comorbidities.

What can influence facial development?

Functioning of muscles

Proper nutrition

Ability to breathe normally

Some of the most common facial development abnormalities seen in children are caused by a compromised airway or the inability to breathe properly through the nose. Children who cannot breathe well through their nose tend to breathe more through their mouth. This sets up a chain of events which may severely impact not only the health of a child but also the way a child’s facial features develop, and ultimately the way a child looks as an adult.

How does mouth breathing in children affect the face and development of the brain?

Nasal breathing is the ideal type of breathing for humans. Unfortunately, a mouth breathing habit can form early in life due to many factors (tongue tie, allergies, lack of breastfeeding diet, etc.) When we mouth breath the pressure from our muscles changes and this effects how our face and jaws grow. This results in deficiency of growth of the jaws and supporting tissues of the face. Mouth breathing can also contribute to a longer face, a poorly formed upper jaw (maxilla), deviated septum, asymmetrical nose and jaws, and an increase in snoring and sleep apnea. Snoring and sleep apnea cause disruption of sleep and oxygen which has been linked to delays in cognitive (brain) development. An underdeveloped jaw can lead to forward head posture, which helps to open the airways- however, throws off the alignment of the spine and body. This poor posture then leads to headaches, teeth grinding, neck/shoulder tension, fatigue.

Pediatric Sleep Apnea

Sleep disorders in children and adolescents are common; even infants may have sleep disorders. Studies have shown that poor sleep quality and/or quantity in children are associated with a host of problems, including academic, behavioral, developmental and social difficulties, weight abnormalities, and other health problems. Not only do pediatric sleep problems affect child health, but they can impact family dynamics and parental or sibling sleep. Children may suffer from problems with falling or staying asleep; from physiological problems such as obstructive sleep apnea, to abnormal or disruptive sleep behaviors such as sleepwalking and other parasomnias such as restless legs syndrome, and even daytime symptoms such as excessive sleepiness, and others. While adults may suffer from the same problems, the etiology, presentation, and associated findings in children may be very different than those seen in adult. Our Phase I Orthopedic treatment is a key treatment to help resolve pediatric sleep apnea and the symptoms that are associated with it.

Airway Health in Adults

IIf airway and breathing problems are not treated early in life or they develop later in life, they can lead to more significant breathing, sleep and health problems (like obstructive sleep apnea down the line). In adults this can show up as:

TMJ Pain/Dysfunction

Insomnia or Poor Sleep

Headaches/Migraines

Fatigue/Low Energy

Mood Swings/Depression

Difficulty Concentrating

Memory Problems

High Blood Pressure

Risk of Obesity Increasing

Risk of Heart Disease Increases

Risk of Immune System Weakening

Risk of Cancer Increases

Phase one – Orthopedics

Kids (ages 5-10)

Why phase one?

Moving baby teeth is not done for the sake of their appearance. The goal of Phase One Orthopedics Treatment is to develop the child’s jaws to make room for the future eruption of permanent teeth and to improve the relationship of the upper and lower jaws. An upper or lower jaw that is growing too much or not enough can benefit from this early orthodontic treatment. Benefits of doing a phase I orthopedic treatment include better airway health (which can lead to better cognitive and facial development), a wider more esthetic smile, less likely to have to remove permanent teeth, and less need of surgeries of more traumatic procedures down the line. Leaving a severe condition untreated until all permanent teeth erupt could result in a problem too severe to correct with braces alone. While baby teeth can move during Phase One Orthopedic treatment, their movement is part of the process to ensure sufficient space for permanent teeth.

How Long Is Phase One Orthopedics?

The treatment time for Phase I treatment is usually between 8-14 months. After this, our patients wear retainers and are checked every four to six months while waiting for the remaining permanent teeth to erupt.

A resting period follows Phase One orthopedic treatment. Later, when most of the permanent teeth have erupted (usually between the ages of eleven and thirteen), A Phase Two orthodontic treatment will be recommended. Out of the 2 phases the 1st phase Orthopedics is the most important and beneficial but there is a window of opportunity that closes around the age of 10 or 11 years old.

Potential Benefits of Phase One Treatment

Influence jaw growth in a positive manner

Improve the width of the dental arches

Reduce the need to extract permanent teeth

Reduce or eliminate the need for jaw surgery

Simplify and shorten treatment time for definitive orthodontic treatment (Phase Two)

Increase stability of final treatment results

Reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth

Improve speech development

Improve position of first molars

Guide permanent teeth into more favorable positions

Improve lip competence

Preserve or gain space for erupting teeth

Improve compliance before the busy teenage years

Signs That Might Mean Your Child Needs To See Us

Phase two

Teens (ages 10-17)

Phase 2 orthodontic treatment usually begins when most or all of permanent teeth are in. The goal of the second phase is to make sure each tooth has an exact location in the mouth where it is in harmony with the lips, cheeks, tongue, and other teeth. When this equilibrium is established, the teeth will function together properly. Phase Two usually involves full upper and lower braces. Retainers are worn after this phase to ensure your child retains his or her beautiful smile.

Potential Benefits of Phase Two Treatment

Help the jaws develop to ensure adequate space for all of the permanent teeth, especially the permanent canines.

May reduce the need to pull permanent teeth in the future.

Some problems that can be treated quite well in a growing child but may require corrective surgery if treatment occurs after growth ends.

Normalize the relationship of the upper jaw to the lower jaw, especially in the case of an underbite.

Intervene in a child’s prolonged sucking or abnormal swallowing.

Damaging pressure can move teeth in the wrong directions and/or change the shape of the bone that supports teeth.

Tuck in upper front teeth that stick out to reduce the risk of those teeth being broken or knocked out.

How Long Will I Have To Wear Braces?

The amount of time it takes to treat your smile with braces depends on three key factors:

1. Early treatment:
Early treatment allows orthodontists to monitor the growth of the jaw and recommend further orthodontic treatment if it becomes necessary. Not everybody receives early orthodontic treatment; in some cases it may be recommended that a patient wait to receive treatment.

2. What needs correction:
The amount of treatment needed to correct a problem will determine how long the process takes. Different patients react to treatments differently. While it may take one patient only 12 months to complete treatment, it may take another patient 24 months. Treatment times can vary depending on how quickly your body responds and how much work is needed to give you the show-stopping smile you expect.

3. YOU!:
Your willingness to use the appliances your orthodontist gives you plays a major role in the length of time it takes to complete your treatment. Always remember to take care of your braces and appliances; this truly will help make your treatment shorter.

The Difference Between Adult & Teens Orthodontics

The main difference to remember when treating adults or children and teens, is that in younger patients the jawbones are still developing. For adults, these bones have stopped growing, which may mean the possibility of orthognathic surgery to align the jawbones. Other differences include:

Hello Ortho Periodontal Disease

Gum or bone loss (periodontal disease)

Adults are more likely than children to experience gum recession or even bone loss due to gingivitis or advanced periodontal disease. Patients with straighter teeth are less likely to get gum disease.

Hello Ortho Worn Teeth

Worn or missing teeth

Over time teeth can become worn down and shift into different positions that can only be corrected with orthodontic care. Missing teeth can cause other teeth to shift and tilt, creating a bad bite and increasing the possibility of gum disease.

Hello Ortho Orthodontic Treatment

Incomplete orthodontic treatment as a teen

Many adults received some orthodontic treatment as a child or teen, but never completed their treatment. As an adult, they choose to complete their orthodontic treatment to achieve the healthy, beautiful smile they always wanted.

Treatment Options To Suit Your Lifestyle

BRACES FAST PASS (50% faster treatment)

At Hello Ortho in both our Napa and Petaluma locations, we use the latest in technology to help achieve treatment times 50% faster than other orthodontic offices. Did you know that the national average for orthodontic treatment times is over 28 months for comprehensive? Here at Hello Ortho, our average is only 14 months. We offer you this Braces Fast Pass to Save you time in braces and we do this by investing in the latest technologies.

Indirect Bonding
We use a process called Indirect Bonding which helps us pre-customize your braces to effect tooth movement in the most optimal way possible, which results in fewer office visits and exceptional comfort, and because treatments are fully customized to each individual our patients see a dramatic reduction in overall time that they need to wear their braces.

Self-Ligating Cermiac (Clear) Braces
Hello Ortho also uses a Self-ligating ceramic brace which means that our braces do not need elastic ties or steel ties any longer like traditional braces.  This means that patients can have less overall visits in their treatment because their ties do not need to be changed. This also means that their appointments are shorter in the office and their overall treatment goes smoother and is likely to lessen the overall time in treatment.

Titanium Wires
Hello Ortho also uses the latest in advanced wires that are placed in the braces.  The metal in these wires were developed by Nasa and have “shape-memory”. Hello Ortho says if its good enough for space travel, it means it great for your orthodontic treatment. These wires enhance your treatment both by minimizing your discomfort, and by minimizing the overall time of your treatment with efficient and optimal forces on teeth to move them as fast as possible.

TUNE UP

We don’t believe cases with minor problems should take as long or cost as much as normal comprehensive treatment. If all you need is front teeth straightening without bite correction you may be a great candidate for our ortho tune up treatment which means your treatment will take 6 months or less and cost much less than standard orthodontic treatment.

Invisalign and 3M Clarity Aligners (clear aligners)

Hello Ortho is the leader in 3M Clarity Aligners and Invisalign services to help you attain a beautiful smile without using unsightly traditional braces. If you’ve decided to invest in your smile with braces, you no longer need to hide that smile during treatment. Instead of traditional wires and brackets, many of our patients are now opting for a nearly invisible alternative, Invisalign. Dr. Jordan has invested many years of learning and training in Invisalign so that he can offer it as an alternative to most cases that require braces. Learn more about clear aligners.

InBrace (hidden braces)

Hello Ortho offers incognito hidden braces that go behind the teeth completely hidden from view. This is by far the most esthetic and discreet option available for straightening your teeth. As one of the only offices in the North Bay area offering lingual braces, ourpatients get the game advantage! Lingual brackets are placed on the inside (lingual or tongue side) of the tooth and is by far the most esthetic bracket system since the brackets are completely hidden from view.
